‘Oath’ finds way to Iranian home market

‘Oath’ enters Iran’s home market of entertainment.

‘Oath’ has entered the domestic home market of entertainment in Iran this week.

Directed by Mohsen Tanabandeh, a brief synopsis for the film reads, “Rezvan is murdered and now her family is after proving the fact that her husband is the one who killed her. The family members led by Rezvan’s sister take a bus to Mashhad where they will testify against Rezvan’s husband swearing on the Quran that he has done it”.

Produced by Elham Ghafouri and Jalil Shabani, the film was screened at events such as the 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival in Japan, the 8th Persian Film Festival in Australia, the 18th Dhaka International Film Festival in Bangladesh, and the 37th Fajr Film Festival in Iran where it got several nominations.

The Hollywood Reporter published a review on the movie and hailed Tanabandeh’s latest film, describing it as a title that “has enough drama and vivid characters to find festival favor”.

The article makes a distinction between Tanabandeh’s comedy ‘Guinness’ and his drama ‘Oath’, noting “One could argue that ‘Oath’ is hardly less surreal than the men who have to ride turkeys in ‘Guinness’. But here the stakes are much higher, particularly for the stalwart heroine Razieh (Afshar), and there is little in the way of comic relief”.
